A.R Rahman, Shahid Kapoor Bipasha Basu’s Scintillating Performances in IL3.

IPL 3 Closing CeremonyThe closing ceremony of the IPL in the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai was a spectacular treat for thousands who had gathered there, as well as those who watched the amazing glitterati on TV.

Music Maestro A.R.Rahman had the entire stadium roaring aloud with his mind blowing numbers like ‘Vande Mataram’, ‘Jai Ho’, etc. He was dressed in pure white and was on a moving vehicle with dancers performing in a big circle.

The bombshell of bollywood, Bipasha Basu looking out of the world in an all black outfit performed in a special song recorded for the IPL, which was based on the title track from her film ‘Race’, she also gyrated in style on the song track ‘All the Best’. She had a group of dancers moving to the beat with equal gutso.

Shahid Kapoor, the energetic star of bollywood young brigade, made a splash with his movements in tracks like ‘Dhan Te Naan’, and two other popular tracks from on his movies. The star had an entourage of dancers accompanying him and his great energy filled performances simply rocked the atmosphere.

The show had some very scintillating laser light shows, which was a great treat for one and all. To finish off the ceremony, the trophy replica was taken all over the ground and it was with a swinging bat that a ball shaped balloon was hit.

This was the significant moment, when the event was finally closed, and the finals between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings began.

Chennai Super Kings IPL-3 champions

Chennai Super Kings are IPL champions; beat Mumbai by 22 runs.

Chennai Super Kings overcame a resolute Sachin Tendulkar, playing with five stitches on his right hand, and a sensational Kieron Pollard to beat Mumbai Indians by 22 runs in a nail-biting final to win the Indian Premier League at a packed D.Y. Patil Stadium at Navi Mumbai Sunday night.

Chennai Super Kings IPL-3 championsSuper Kings, electing to bat, scored 168 for five with Suresh Raina smashing an unbeaten 57 off 35 balls.

Despite captain Tendulkar's (48 off 45 balls) heroics and Pollard's (27 off 10 balls) ferocious hitting in the end, Mumbai Indians ended up with 146 for nine in 20 overs.

Pollard put Mumbai Indians on the brink of an improbable win when he struck two fours and two massive sixes off Chennai's best bowler Doug Bollinger in the 18th over that went for 22 runs.

The burly West Indian took the guard when Mumbai were staring down the barrel and needed 55 runs off 18 balls at that stage.

Pollard in Bollinger's over brought Mumbai back in the reckoning, but the home team lost the initiative in the penultimate over bowled beautifully by Albie Morkel.

Ambati Rayudu was run out after a mix-up and Pollard soon followed on the last ball of Morkel's over as Mathew Hayden picked a blinder inside the circle.

Super Kings, who had lost in the first IPL final to Rajasthan Royals, broke in celebration, even as the home crowd fell silent.

It was Tendulkar who kept Mumbai Indians in the hunt.

Mumbai lost Shikhar Dhawan with only one run on the board, before Tendulkar and Abhishek Nayar (27) added 66 runs for the second wicket.

Tendulkar cut loose when he struck two spectacular boundaries off Morkel. The master batsman quickly shuffled across the off-stump and picked the backward square-leg region for the first. The second four was a classic cover drive that penetrated the field with precision.

After a few dry overs, Nayar struck two consecutive sixes off Shadab Jakati.

But just when it looked Mumbai were picking up the momentum, they lost two wickets in the 12th over, bowled by part-time off spinner Raina.

Nayar was run out when he tried to steal a single which was never there and Dhoni made no mistake. Harbhajan Singh, who was promoted up the order for some quick scoring, was trapped lbw.

Rayudu and Tendulkar kept pace with the asking rate with some clean strikes, but Mumbai Indians got two more jolts in the 15th over. This time Tendulkar was dismissed as he lofted left-arm spinner Jakati to long on only to find Murali Vijay's hands. The master batsmen ended as the highest run scorer in the tournament with 618 runs.

Earlier, Raina rode on his luck as he was dropped twice in his 35-ball innings that included three fours and three sixes.

Super Kings got off to a slow start with Murali Vijay (26) and Matthew Hayden (17) sharing a 44-run opening stand in as many balls.

Raina and Subramaniam Badrinath (14) added 19 runs before the latter was dismissed by Dilhara Fernando (2-23).

Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (22 off 15 balls) then added 72 runs for the fourth wicket. Dhoni struck two fours and one six but was caught by Fernando after mishitting a full toss from Zaheer Khan.

Raina then used the long handle in the end with the final five overs fetching Super Kings 60 runs.

Rahman to perform at IPL awards function!

AR Rahman to perform live at IPL finaleThis news will surely delight AR Rahman fans. One of India’s and the world’s mostloved composers AR Rahman will be performing back-to-back in Mumbai on April 24 and 25.

While he will be first performing live on April 24 for the music release of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan for a select audience from Bollywood and the media at Yash Raj Studios, the next day Rahman’s performance will be the highlight of the IPL grand finale at DY Patil stadium. It’s a double treat for Rahman fans as he has not performed live in Mumbai for many years and certainly not after receiving the Oscar.

Ratnam’s favourite composer Rahman is taking a break from his current world tour to attend and perform during the music release of Raavan. Word that Rahman will be doing a live show in Mumbai has already begun to spread in the film industry.

The official spokesperson of Raavan said, “Never before had we started getting requests for an invite to a music function days in advance. Call it the Mani magic, the Rahman magic or their combination. Or maybe it’s the excitement of a Rahman concert as he hasn’t performed live in Mumbai for ages.”

On April 24, the composer is expected to perform a couple of tracks from Raavan and selected songs from all Mani Ratnam films he has scored for right from Roja to Guru. The Raavan concert is so special that Abhishek Bachchan, who will be shooting in Greece for Abhinay Deo’s Game, will cut short his shooting to fly back to Mumbai for a day.

The entire cast and crew of Raavan along with the entire Bachchan family will attend the Rahman concert on April 24.

A source said, “Mani Ratnam himself has planned this grand event. Only the cast and crew of the film are aware of it. Rahman is already in Mumbai and has started rehearsing for the same. The very next day he will be performing live at the DY Patil stadium for the IPL finale where he will perform his Oscar winning song Jai ho.

IPL semi-finals shifted to Navi Mumbai.

IPL point table before semifinal
The two semi-finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) that were to be held in Bangalore on April 21 and 22 have been shifted to Navi Mumbai.

Even as officials of the IPL said that decision was taken keeping in mind the safety of players and fans following Saturday’s twin blasts at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya termed it “unfair” while Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari defended the security arrangements in place for the matches.

Top officials of BCCI, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and IPL security agency discussed with Bidari the security arrangements for the semis that were slated on Wednesday and Thursday.

After the meeting, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said the decision was taken keeping in mind the security concerns of the players.

Modi said the IPL was reluctant to relocate the semifinals at such a short notice. “But yesterday’s incidents have made it clear that the current environment in Bangalore prevents us from continuing with our original plans.”

IPL points table 2010 : IPL semi-final race

DLF IPL live score and IPL 2010 match schedule

IPL points table 2010It's a bit of a mind boggler for the laymen and sheer wonder for the avid statistician, but do wrap your brain around the following to find out who needs what in order to qualify for the 2010 IPL semi-finals

Nine wins across a dozen matches on the back of a superior run-rate sees the Mumbai Indians sitting pretty on 16 points - four points more than their closest rivals - and thus already secure in a semi-final berth.

All but through to the last four, the Bangalore Royal Challengers can seal the deal with a victory over Mumbai, whom they beat earlier in the tournament, on Saturday. Even if things do not go their way against Sachin Tendulkar's posse, a profitable net run-rate means Bangalore need not depend on other results - unlike the chasing pack - in the group stage's closing fixtures.

Another franchise basking in a plentiful net run-rate, the Chennai Super Kings only have to win one of their last two games - against temperamental Delhi or the bottom-feeding Kings XI Punkab - in order to line up alongside Mumbai and company. Losing both matches, however, will leave the Super Kings on shaky ground and all too reliant on other results.

Despite the presence of the big-hitting Virender Sehwag, the Delhi Daredevils' net run-rate isn't as formidable as one would have anticipated at the start of the tournament. Hence, they're left seeking a couple of wins - or at least one utterly convincing one - against Chennai and the Deccan Chargers this week. At the same time they'll be hoping fellow mid-table lurkers Deccan fluff their final games against the Kings XI and Delhi, leaving Adam Gilchrist's posse languishing on 12 points and the Daredevils in the clear on 14 points.

Even if the Rajasthan Royals manage to upstage Kolkata on Saturday, which will take them to 14 points, they're left with an unhealthy dependence on other results thanks to their unenviable net run-rate of -0.421. The former champions' only hope lies in a huge win over the Knight Riders coupled with two losses for Delhi and two wins each for Chennai and Deccan. Fat chance, indeed.

Another side to have fallen prey to a poor net run-rate, the Deccan Chargers' best case scenario requires wins over Punjab and Delhi to get 'em through to the final four on points. On the contrary, two losses guns the defending champs out of contention entirely, while a solitary win from their remaining two fixtures leaves them to the devices of other results.

In the same boat as Rajasthan, the Kolkata Knight Riders must win their final clash and will Delhi to beat Chennai and Deccan and the Kings XI to console their awful campaign with a two-triumph high. So in other words, a lot needs to go their way.

A snowball's chance in hell leaves the Kings XI Punjab needing to string together two wins on the trot - something they haven't managed all season - and a host of net run-rate unlikelihood to play into their hands.

This piece will be updated each morning to reflect the previous night's result, so keep checking in to see how things have progressed.

Team Mat Won Lost Tied N/R Pts Net RR
Mumbai Indians 12 9 3 0 0 18 +1.116
Bangalore Royal Challengers 13 7 6 0 0 14 +0.467
Chennai Super Kings 12 6 6 0 0 12 +0.348
Delhi Daredevils 12 6 6 0 0 12 +0.024
Rajasthan Royals 13 6 7 0 0 12 -0.421
Deccan Chargers 12 6 6 0 0 12 -0.438
Kolkata Knight Riders 12 5 7 0 0 10 -0.632
Kings XI Punjab 12 4 8 0 0 8 -0.484

Threat texts to Shashi Throor, Brinda

One arrested in Shashi Throor death threat SMS

Shashi ThroorNeither Shashi Tharoor nor Brinda Karat will like this common factor: both have received unflattering text messages from the same place.

While the junior foreign minister was asked to “apologise to IPL commissioner Lalit Modi or be prepared to die”, the CPM leader was censured for her style of politics.

Both the threat messages were sent from the Harinagar area in Delhi around the same time last night. Although police said Manik Verma, from whose cellphone the message to Brinda was sent, had been detained, they were tight-lipped about Tharoor’s case.

The death threat to Tharoor, sent to his officer on special duty Jacob Joseph, asks the junior foreign minister to stay clear of the Kochi franchisee as the “D-company is involved” in the IPL team. The message was attributed to Chhota Shakeel, a member of Dawood’s gang.

The message sent to Brinda read: “You are harming the country by your politics.”

Tharoor’s office informed the home ministry about the SMS, following which a police team whisked him away to an undisclosed location where he stayed for some time before returning to his Lodi Road residence.

Police sources said the person held in Tharoor’s case was being questioned by officials from the special cell and the Intelligence Bureau.

The sources said the police were yet to establish any underworld connection.

However, the police said they had not registered a case because there was no complaint from Tharoor. WXHQ7VJG2BSY

Deepika Padukone to sizzle at IPL ceremony

Deepika to perform at IPL opening ceremony.

Deepika Padukone
Bring on the glitter and the glam as the country gets ready tomorrow for one of the biggest and showiest extravaganzas of the year.

After all, the IPL isn’t just about cricket, is it? And Season 3’s opening ceremony in Mumbai promises to be bigger and better than last year.

Starting with a scintillating performance by international artiste Ali Campbell of the British reggae band UB40, who’ll croon the all-time hit song, Can’t Help Falling In Love, the ageless Bjorn Again will entertain audiences with Abba’s super hit Dancing Queen at the opening ceremony, which promises to be a visual spectacle as well.

But the best is yet to follow. A choreographed light show will announce the entry of Deepika Padukone, who promises to pack a punch along with 40 dancers on stage — giving serious competition to Katrina’s hip swaying with Akon last year — who’ll perform to a medley of I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas, Uff Teri Ada from Karthik Calling Karthik and Twist from Love Aaj Kal. Then the legendary Lionel Richie comes on stage, and, of course, R&B rapper Akon.

Says Sundar Raman, CEO, IPL, “The IPL weekend fever has already begun. But the real action will take off on Thursday night in Mumbai. Lalit Modi, chairman and commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL), will host a grand party at the Turf Ground in Mumbai.

The party will begin in the evening around 8 pm. Entry is by invitation only. The guest list will include eminent people from Bollywood, socialites, corporate honchos, politicians, bureaucrats and cricketers. But the main attraction of the evening will be the performances by the international artistes.”

Sundar elaborates, “Day 1 of the IPL tournament kicks off with an opening ceremony before the match, on Friday evening. It will be a visually spectacular show. The opening ceremony will begin at 6.45 pm at the DY Patil Sports Stadium in Mumbai. After the match concludes, IPL officials and players will proceed to a plush city hotel to attend the after-match party-cum-fashion show.”

We also hear that a lot of Delhi celebrities are planning to attend the opening ceremony. Says Delhi socialite Shaleen Jain, “I’m eagerly waiting to be there at the opening ceremony along with my friends to watch all the action live at the Mumbai ground.”

DLF Indian Premier League 2010 - IPL 3 schedule

IPL 2010 Complete Match Schedule with opening match on March 12, final match on April 25.

Indian T20 cricket fans would surely be waiting for Friday 12-Mar-2010. D.Y. Patil Stadium of Navi Mumbai is all set to host the inaugural match of IPL 3rd Season. The fans would see IPL 2nd seasons defending champions Deccan Chargers playing against 2nd seasons worst performing team Kolkata Knight Riders.

IPL 2010 season has been in limelight since it opened its bidding window – as none of the IPL teams opted for available Pakistani players.

The 2nd season of IPL had to be shifted to South Africa due to general elections in India. There were quite a few players who raised security concerns this year but the IPL governing council and BCCI were quick to rule out any such option.

The IPL teams are following

1) Deccan Chargers
2) Delhi Daredevils
3) Kings XI Punjab
4) Chennai super kings
5) Kolkata Knight Riders
6) Royal Challengers
7) Rajasthan Royals and
8) Mumbai Indians.

Each team would play 14 league matches – which means that each team will play against each other twice. There are two matches scheduled everyday from 12-Mar to 21-Apr 2010 in 4 PM and 8 PM slots respectively.

The top four teams emerging out of the league phase would then move on to the semifinal stage of the championship. Chinnaswamy stadium, Bengaluru would host both the semifinals on 21-Apr-10 and 22-Apr -2010 respectively The format of the game is such that it is not possible to predict the top four teams at this stage.

D Y Patil Stadium would host the final match of the championship on Sunday 25-Apr-2010. IPL governing council has ensured that almost all the matches are scheduled in the evening slot, so that maximum number of fans can see their heroes playing.

There have been four new venues added to the event this year, namely Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Dharamsala and Nagpur. Also BCCI has invited bids for 2 more franchises. As a result the next season of IPL would have atleast 10 teams competing. The move of adding the new venues is seen as a strategy to estimate the pulse of IPL20 in these cities.

Complete schedule for IPL 2010, IPL 3 fixture for season 3 for each team and all 60 matches:

IPL ticket pricing prerogative of franchises.

The ticket pricing during the IPL 2010 at all venues was the prerogative of the IPL franchises.

Niranjan Shah, Vice Chairman of Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council, clarifying this, said ticket prices at IPL 2010 was not controlled or governed by the BCCI-IPL.

IPL 2010 – the league’s third season, is all set to begin in India from March 12 following last year’s tournament being hosted in South Africa where the Deccan Chargers triumphed.

IPL 2010 will feature eight teams playing Twenty20 cricket, compete in a unique cricketing carnival.

Fuelled by unparallel entertainment on and off the pitch, IPL 2010 will see the participation of some of the world’s greatest players including Sachin Tendulkar, Kevin Pietersen, Shane Warne, Jacques Kallis and Chris Gayle.

Meanwhile, the IPL is inducting two new franchises into its fold on Sunday.

The league currently comprises eight franchises that are gearing up to lock horns in the third season.

The two new teams will be announced Sunday noon on the basis of a bidding process that has been in progress from Monday, Feb 22.

The new franchises will be invited to participate in the fourth season of the competition in 2011, but they will get a bird’s eye view of the league’s proceedings this season itself.

The 2010 Indian Premier League season (IPL 3) will end on April 25.

IPL Cricketers To Wear Eco-Friendly Sportswear.

One of the biggest sporting extravaganzas in the country Indian Premier League (IPL) plans for an environment friendly cricket with the players donning eco-friendly sportswear.

The well-known hosiery industry of Ludhiana is all set to help the organisers with its ‘green kits’. IPL team owners like Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, the Ambani’s have given contracts for the eco-friendly sportswear for their players and it is being expected that fans would love to buy them as souvenirs.

The manufacturers are trying ko keep carbon footprint low for the sportswear. Carbon footprint is the measure of the ‘environment-killer’ carbon dioxide (CO2) released in any activity by way of energy consumed to produce goods or carry out any work.

The specially designed “carbon neutraliser” clothing curtails the vital count at every stage of production — from raw materials to packaging. The average of 6-8 kg CO2 is released in garment manufacture which will come down to 3.5 –4.5 kg per ‘dri-fit garment’ being produced.

About 16 lakh such kits will be produced by different units. Reebok has given the contract to Ankita Impex .Owner Arun Dhand says, “We imported special raw materials, including polyester, which is sourced from recycling. Its carbon credentials have been scientifically established.”

Reebok has received the contract for sportswear from Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers, Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab. Global brand, Adidas will provide outfits to Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils .Adidas has given the contract to two other City-based firms — Knitwell Apparels and Ankita Impex’s sister concern run by Dhand’s son Anuj.

The green kits with unique feature of small carbon footprint have many other qualities. The kits are 16 per cent lighter than the ones used in IPL I and II.The new kits will be more comfortable as they have been designed to keep the wearer dry and cool. The fabric facilitates faster evaporation of sweat. The laser-cut holes enhance ‘breathability’ of the garment.

This is for the second time local units have received contracts for fabricating sportswear for the IPL. One of the factory workers Jugraj said, “It was a proud moment when I saw team owner Vijay Mallaya wearing the shirt tailored by me. This time, I’ve asked to be again put on the unit stitching for Royal Challengers.”

IPL 2010 : Indian premier League in 3D

The Indian premier League will make its 3D debut in select theatres.

 Indian premier League in 3D
January 20 2010 : Call it the Avatar effect, the Indian premier League will make its 3D debut in select theatres this season. “We are going 3D. we’ll be the first sporting body in the world to do so,” Lalit Modi, commisioner of IPL, told.

UFO Moviez, the official theatre rights-holder for the Twenty20 tournament, is working on showing the semifinals and final live in 3D. It will be available in cinemas, pubs, bars, and in due time, TV too, Mr Modi said in an exclusive interview. Excerpts:

How do you evaluate this year’s auction?

It went quite well and the results were by and large along the expected lines. But bid for some of the players did surprise me.

A lot of Australian players as well the entire Pakistan list failed to attract any bids. Do you think cricket boards need to be more open with their windows in terms of giving them access during the IPL?

I think this is a central issue that has cropped up across all franchisees. It’s a two-year old tournament, and franchisees are gradually learning that availability of the players is a key factor. They are ready to pay a good price if the players are available.

Have you noticed any difference in the buying trends of the franchisees over the years?

There has been a big difference. Earlier, everyone was going only for big names as they wanted star value in the team. Now, they know that winning is the most important thing. So, its important for them to have a cohesive team. They need to have all types of players in the team and they are realising it now. So, now they are ready to sacrifice big names.

What’s your favourite team in terms of the most wise buy?

I think Vijay Mallya did very well today. He managed to get the under-19 captain of India. It’s a good pick.

Did IPL make significant money today?

IPL has been consistently subsidising players. For us, it’s not the point of making money. It does not make any difference to us one way or the other. The issue is we wanted to have a system in place that could help break a tie... it’s (tie) probably never going to happen ever again.

We looked at all the leagues and other mechanism around the world and found that we’re fair.

IPL is coming back to India. I think you have done a wonderful job of enhancing the brand image of IPL. Will there be any surprise this time?

I will break the news here. We are going 3D and we’ll be the first sporting body in the world to do so. I have seen the presentation, it’s very expensive but from next year onwards, we hope that we’ll be able to make it available for all games. This year we’re experimenting with four games—last four games will be 3D. I

t’s a major innovation, it will be available in cinemas, pubs and bars. We also want to introduce the spider cam wherein the camera actually moves across the ground like a spider web. Again it’s a hitech thing and we will be introducing it for the last four games. The IPL is here to build a brand and build on the consumer experience. Our job is to enhance the viewing features of the fans at home and in the stadium.

How much of a hit did BCCI and IPL take during last tournament?

At the end of the day, we’re creating IPL as a global property. For us, it’s most important to build the fan base. We’re a non-profit organisation. We took IPL to SA by creating a whole-new fanbase. We turned adversity into opportunity and put our best foot forward. Money was not the criteria.

Champions league was not a blockbuster. Are you trying to glamourise the Champions League and make it as big as IPL?

I think Champions League is champion of champions. The IPL players go back and play for their own country and as Indian consumers start to understand these teams, I think it will only become more popular. We’re starting from scratch, but we’ll keep investing in it.

Indian Premier League auction Shortlisted players

IPL 2010 Shortlisted players
January 07 2010 : Seven Pakistan players have made the cut for the next Indian Premier League auction after the lifting of their competition ban, while fresh English talent is conspicuously absent from the 51-man shortlist.

Pakistan players were banned from the last IPL due to the political fallout from the Mumbai terrorist attacks, but have been allowed back in for the third edition of the lucrative Twenty20 league, to be played from March 12 to April 25.

Pakistan's Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi, young batting sensation Umar Akmal and fast improving paceman Mohammad Aamir are among the shortlisted Pakistan players named on Thursday, along with spinner Saeed Ajmal, hard-hitting opening batsman Imran Nazir and allrounders Rana Naved and Abdul Razzaq.

While Pakistan players missed out last season, England players look like being absent from the upcoming campaign. None were on the shortlist for the Jan 19 auction, with IPL commissioner Lalit Modi quoted on cricinfo.com as saying their absence was due to "new conditions imposed by the ECB."

The shortlist released on Thursday was said to be final, meaning even late negotiations between the English and Indian cricket boards thought to center on the unwillingness of the ECB to have its players absent from the early part of its domestic season would be too late to get England players involved.

The auction, in which franchises bid for players based on annual salaries, will add new players to the existing international mix of those on existing multi-year contracts.

Australia attracted the most players in the shortlist of new recruits with 11. It is followed by South Africa (9), Sri Lanka (8), West Indies (8), Pakistan (7), New Zealand (4) and one each from Bangladesh, Canada, Holland and Zimbabwe.

The auction allows teams to supplement their squads, adding to players on multi-year contracts carrying over from previous seasons.
