Commonwealth Games News Updates! Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived here on Thursday afternoon to attend the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games as the guest of honour.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will host a lunch for Rajapaksa and his delegation, comprising Foreign Minister GL Peiris and Foreign Secretary CR Jayasinghe, at his residence on Friday.

Rajapaksa is expected to inform Manmohan Singh about the steps taken by his government to resettle around 300,000 displaced Tamil civilians displaced in the war against the LTTE and his search for a political solution for ethnic minorities, official sources said.

Rajapaksa returns to Colombo late on Friday afternoon.

India's invitation to Rajapkasa to be the guest of honour at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games has angered some Tamil diaspora groups and human rights activists, who accuse him of gross rights violations in the course of the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam which ended in May last year.

More than 100 people were arrested in Tamil Nadu on Thursday for protesting against Rajapaksa's presence at the Games closing ceremony.

Some 100 people, including MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, were taken into custody in Coimbatore, police said in Chennai.

Vaiko, a long-time supporter of the Tamil Tigers, alleged that while New Delhi protested when Indians were attacked in Australia, it was silent despite the deaths of many innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Around 15 college students were also arrested from Salem district after they burnt Rajapaksa's effigy, denouncing his presence at the Games.

India's Commonwealth Games gold medallist in discus throw Krishna Poonia Wednesday called on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister C.P. Joshi and thanked him for his 'constant encouragement'.

Twenty-eight-year old Poonia, a farmer's daughter and mother of a nine-year-old boy said such felicitations will boost her confidence and she hopes to 'emulate the feat' at the next Asian Games and Olympics, a rural development ministry release stated.

Poonia from Gagarwas village in Rajasthan was reported to have found it difficult to raise funds for her training sessions. She is now busy attending felicitations and receiving cash prizes for her historic performance Monday ensuring a top podium finish by hurling the discus to a distance of 61.51 metres.

The last time such a feat was achieved in track and field was 37 years ago by the Indian men's trio of shot putters Jugraj Singh, Gurdeep Singh and Bahadur Singh Chouhan at the Asian Championships at Manila.

Joshi said Poonia has made the country proud with her 'glorious achievement'.

He added that her performance will motivate the youngsters to participate in the track and field events.

CWG News Updates! It was a historic moment for India at the Commonwealth Games 2010. For this India had to wait for 52 years. Woman discus thrower Krishna Poonia was at the centre of attraction after she won the gold medal.

The whole stadium gave Poonia a rapturous welcome at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as she landed on the podium to receive her gold medal. She grabbed the top honor by throwing the discus to 61.51 metres. The most interesting of the show was that she got full support from her other team-mate Harwant Kaur. She bagged silver with a 60.16 m throw. Seema Antil too followed them by grabbing the bronze, completing 1-2-3. This all was possible because of the 58.46 metre effort.

This is for the first time India’s track history that such a feat has been accomplished by women. The Indian men’s trio of shot putters Jugraj Singh, Gurdeep Singh and Bahadur Singh Chouhan had achieved the unthinkable for the first time at the Asian Championships at Manila some 37 years ago.

By grabbing the gold in filed, Poonia wowed some 35,000 spectators who had turned up at the stadium to watch her win the medal. There was a jubilation at the stadium with many breaking into singing “Jana Gana Mana.” They all enjoyed the moment. It reminded many of the ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh’s golden run in the 400 metres at Cardiff in 1958.

When the anthem was sung, all those present at the stadium including journalists, security personnel, started singing the anthem. They were pleased to see that India continued to rock at the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Krishna said: “I can’t express my happiness at the support I see all around. I enjoyed it and I thank all the people who came to support me.” The 28-year-old Poonia was also ecstatic for being part of history.
