Attacks on Indians in Australia

Attacks on Indians
January 08 2010 : The war of words intensified on Thursday between India and Australia over the continuing attacks on Indian students in Australia since May 2009. Two Indians have also been killed in recent attacks.

India on Thursday toughened its stand saying Australia must take urgent remedial action to ensure that no such attacks happen again. Australia has been saying that India and the Indian media are drumming up jingoistic hysteria over what are not racist crimes.

Racism versus urban crime

Sanjay Srivastava started off the discussion by saying that the students studying in Australia thought that the crimes were a mixture of urban crime and racism.

He said, “You can either have a war of words or try and do something concrete. The Indian Government can ask the Australian government to look at the sets of rules and regulations that put Indian students in dangerous job, working late nights, etc. So, I think we need to move beyond simply trading words.”

In order to look at concrete steps, the identification of the disease needs to be made a priority. There are 200,000 immigrant populations in Australia, none of the settlers are being attacked. It’s the new breed of Indian students who are being attacked.

KC Singh agreed and felt that there should be a recognition of the real problem.

It happens only is Australia

Should Australia have been much more introspective about its educational programmes holding out to students from India?

Padma Rao came on rather assertively at this point of the discussion and said that India had a long way to go before it could question other people’s educational and racial policies.

“I am not even beginning to go down the road and mention crimes committed in the name of caste and gender in this country,” added Rao.

Tarun Vijay expressed shock at Padma’s Rao’s argument and felt that her argument wasn’t an argument at all.

“I believe that the Aussies are the most atrocious and horrendous racists on this planet. These people should be taught a lesson and they should be banned. Indian students shouldn’t be allowed to go to Australia,” stressed Vijay.

PM for top security of Indians abroad

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said his government's top priority is to protect the Indian students and workers living abroad.

Addressing the 8th 'Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas' here, the Prime Minister said: "Security of overseas workers and students is top priority."

His assurance came amid violent attacks on Indians living in countries like Australia. He said the government is planning safety nets for the returning workers.

He also said that Indian will soon return to high growth path of 9 to 10 percent and infrastructure, agriculture, education and health are key priorities of the government.

No racist attack against Indians in Australia : Sreenivasan

Stating that the attacks against Indian students in Australia were not connected with racism, Federation of Indian Associations in Australia President Vasan Sreenivasan claimed that many attacks against Indians were for robbery.

Talking to reporters here, he alleged that the media was portraying such attacks as racist.

Recently, a car owned by an Indian in Australia met with an accident and caught fire. But, a national television channel reported that the car was set ablaze by racist attackers, he charged.

Mr Sreenivasan also said as a person living in Australia for more than two decades, he never felt any racial discrimination there.

Normally Indians living in Australia were wealthy people and this was one of the main reasons which makes them more prone to attacks from robbers, he said.

Unfortunately, incidents of attacks were portrayed in media as racist attacks, he said, adding, this would create more problems for Indians living in Australia.

Attacks on Indian students not racially motivated : Assn

Asserting that attacks on Indian students were not racially motivated, Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria (FIAV) today said the Australian and state governments were taking many steps for the safety and security of the Indians studying there.

The media is blowing up the issue, FIAV President Vasan Srinivasan told reporters here.

Srinivasan said he had been staying in the State of Victoria for the last over 15 years and had not faced any such problems. The attacks on Indian students were not racially motivated, he said.

The Federation had taken various initiatives like holding meetings with government, police and student representatives to ensure safety and security of the Indian students.

The Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria was formed in 1989 by a group of resident Indian migrants. The mission of FIAV was to protect, sustain and empower the community in Victoria, he said.

Six killed in Karachi house explosion : Pakistan News Said

Explosion in Karachi house
January 08 2010 : An explosion at a house in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi killed at least six people Friday morning, police said.

The blast happened in Balida Town, a poor neighbourhood of the southern city, Pakistan's commercial hub.

The cause of the blast was not immediately known, but local TV showed footage of a destroyed building.

"There was a blast in a house in Karachi's Balida Town in which six people were killed. The house collapsed. We are trying to ascertain the exact nature of the blast," senior police official Abdul Majeed Dasti told the AFP news agency.

He said hand grenades and a Kalashnikov rifle had been found at the site of the explosion.

Pakistan has seen an upsurge in violence in recent months.

Hundreds of civilians have died in bomb attacks as Pakistan's army concludes an offensive against Taliban militants in South Waziristan and surrounding areas.

DIG West Abdul Majeed Dasti has confirmed the killing of six people. The bodies are still trapped under the rubbles of the part of the house that caved-in due to explosion as bomb disposal squad is searching for more explosives.

Police and Rangers have cordoned off the area. Two hand grenades, a suicide jacket and a Kalashnikov recovered from the blast site.

On Dec. 28, a bombing against a Shiite Muslim religious procession in the city killed 43 people and wounded dozens. Riots broke out after that attack, with people setting fire to the country's largest wholesale market. The blaze burned for more than two days and destroyed thousands of shops in the area.

Indian Premier League auction Shortlisted players

IPL 2010 Shortlisted players
January 07 2010 : Seven Pakistan players have made the cut for the next Indian Premier League auction after the lifting of their competition ban, while fresh English talent is conspicuously absent from the 51-man shortlist.

Pakistan players were banned from the last IPL due to the political fallout from the Mumbai terrorist attacks, but have been allowed back in for the third edition of the lucrative Twenty20 league, to be played from March 12 to April 25.

Pakistan's Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi, young batting sensation Umar Akmal and fast improving paceman Mohammad Aamir are among the shortlisted Pakistan players named on Thursday, along with spinner Saeed Ajmal, hard-hitting opening batsman Imran Nazir and allrounders Rana Naved and Abdul Razzaq.

While Pakistan players missed out last season, England players look like being absent from the upcoming campaign. None were on the shortlist for the Jan 19 auction, with IPL commissioner Lalit Modi quoted on cricinfo.com as saying their absence was due to "new conditions imposed by the ECB."

The shortlist released on Thursday was said to be final, meaning even late negotiations between the English and Indian cricket boards thought to center on the unwillingness of the ECB to have its players absent from the early part of its domestic season would be too late to get England players involved.

The auction, in which franchises bid for players based on annual salaries, will add new players to the existing international mix of those on existing multi-year contracts.

Australia attracted the most players in the shortlist of new recruits with 11. It is followed by South Africa (9), Sri Lanka (8), West Indies (8), Pakistan (7), New Zealand (4) and one each from Bangladesh, Canada, Holland and Zimbabwe.

The auction allows teams to supplement their squads, adding to players on multi-year contracts carrying over from previous seasons.

Militants die in Srinagar, Kashmir attack

India News Updates : Attack in Srinagar Kashmir
January 07 2010 : A day-long stand-off between militants and security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir has ended with the killing of two gunmen, officials say.

The gunmen launched their grenade and gun attack in Srinagar on Wednesday killing a civilian and a policeman. They subsequently entered a hotel in the city's Lal Chowk area and exchanged fire with security forces.

Officials said they belonged to the Pakistan-based banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. But there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack so far.

This is the first major militant attack in Srinagar in two years. Violence in Indian-administered Kashmir has declined dramatically in recent years.

The police chief of Jammu and Kashmir state Kuldeep Khoda told reporters that the "operation was over" with the killing of the two militants.

He said the security forces had killed the two gunmen - and that the second one was shot while trying to escape the hotel building after setting fire to it.

"We are trying to find out whether there were any more terrorists inside. We will be launching combing operations in the area soon," Mr Khoda said.

He said security forces had evacuated a number of people from the area since the stand-off began on Wednesday afternoon.

The attack took place in the city's historic Lal Chowk or Red Square area.

The Altaf Hussain in Srinagar says that there was a heavy exchange of fire between the security forces and the gunmen early on Thursday morning as the stand-off continued.

The security forces also rescued 10 people from a neighbouring hotel in what is a crowded business district in the city, our correspondent says.

India and Pakistan declared a ceasefire in 2004, but suspended peace talks after the 2008 Mumbai (Bombay) attacks, which India blamed on Pakistan-based militants.

Separately, at least three soldiers were killed and 11 injured in a suicide bombing outside an army barracks in Pakistani-administered Kashmir on Wednesday.

No group has claimed the attack near the town of Rawalakot. It follows a number of recent attacks on Shia Muslims and the security forces.
