Flight from London in accident on landing at Harare Airport
News agencies are reporting on Thursday that a Boeing 767 on a flight from London to Harare has been involved in an accident.
Aviation officials and witnesses advised AFP that ambulances had raced to Harare international airport after the flight was involved in an accident on landing.
David Chawota, the head of Zimbabwe's Civil Aviation Authority said “I can confirm that a 767 plane coming from London has had an accident at Harare airport. We are trying to establish what has caused the accident. We have set up an emergency help line desk to assist."
The airline involved has not yet been identified nor specific details of the damage to the plane or injuries to passengers.
Of concern is that witnesses said that several ambulances were seen heading towards the airport.
The airport is operated by Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe and is the hub of Air Zimbabwe.
It was constructed by an engineering Company called Integrated Contracting Engineers , which is owned by Leo Mugabe nephew of the President Robert Mugabe .The airport's runway, at 4,725 metres (15,502 ft), is one of the longest in Africa. It compares with OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, whose longest runway measures 4,418 metres (14,495 ft)
The reason for this is that both are "hot and high" airports.
