Crishna Edwards dead today.

Girl Dies After Being Struck On Hollywood Street.

A 9-year-old girl who was hit while trying to cross the street Tuesday evening has succumbed to her injuries at Memorial Regional Hospital.

According to a preliminary investigation, 20-year-old Daniel Pagan was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla northbound on North 23rd Avenue when it collided with Crishna Edwards just before 6 p.m. just as she emerged from the south alley of Roosevelt Street, in a westerly direction.

Witnesses said Pagan ran to the girl's aid. "I was in my room, and I heard a loud screech," said teen Jamar Polynice. "So I came out of my kitchen, and I started running toward the little girl laying down with her father, and the father was crying over her."

Hollywood Fire-Rescue, which responded to the scene along with Hollywood Police, transported the girl to the hospital in critical condition. "It wasn't good, but she was kind of stable," said the teen witness' mother, Claudia Polynice, a nurse who attended to Edwards. "She was breathing very heavily, her pupils were dilated, and she was bleeding out of her ear, but she wasn't talking ... responding, anything."

Authorities said the Stirling Elementary second grader expired at approximately 9:50 p.m.

It remains unclear if any charges will be filed against Pagan, who was interviewed by traffic homicide investigators and submitted to a voluntary blood withdrawal at their request. "What I heard was that the girl ... hesitated to go across the street and then [Pagan] stopped, and then I guess as soon as he let go of the brake, she ran across the street, and he pressed the gas simultaneously," said the nurse's son.

According to the Polynices, the girl and her family just moved into the neighborhood and live across the street from the scene of the accident, where a makeshift memorial comprised of stuffed animals and flowers took shape. "She moved here about two weeks ago," said the elder Polynice. "We were actually talking to her yesterday because she's a new little girl in the neighborhood, and everybody knows each other in this neighborhood."

Officials said three children have been struck at that intersection. "A few years ago my daughter got hit at the same place," said Claudia Polynice, "so I know exactly what that mom was feeling."
