The Indian premier League will make its 3D debut in select theatres.

 Indian premier League in 3D
January 20 2010 : Call it the Avatar effect, the Indian premier League will make its 3D debut in select theatres this season. “We are going 3D. we’ll be the first sporting body in the world to do so,” Lalit Modi, commisioner of IPL, told.

UFO Moviez, the official theatre rights-holder for the Twenty20 tournament, is working on showing the semifinals and final live in 3D. It will be available in cinemas, pubs, bars, and in due time, TV too, Mr Modi said in an exclusive interview. Excerpts:

How do you evaluate this year’s auction?

It went quite well and the results were by and large along the expected lines. But bid for some of the players did surprise me.

A lot of Australian players as well the entire Pakistan list failed to attract any bids. Do you think cricket boards need to be more open with their windows in terms of giving them access during the IPL?

I think this is a central issue that has cropped up across all franchisees. It’s a two-year old tournament, and franchisees are gradually learning that availability of the players is a key factor. They are ready to pay a good price if the players are available.

Have you noticed any difference in the buying trends of the franchisees over the years?

There has been a big difference. Earlier, everyone was going only for big names as they wanted star value in the team. Now, they know that winning is the most important thing. So, its important for them to have a cohesive team. They need to have all types of players in the team and they are realising it now. So, now they are ready to sacrifice big names.

What’s your favourite team in terms of the most wise buy?

I think Vijay Mallya did very well today. He managed to get the under-19 captain of India. It’s a good pick.

Did IPL make significant money today?

IPL has been consistently subsidising players. For us, it’s not the point of making money. It does not make any difference to us one way or the other. The issue is we wanted to have a system in place that could help break a tie... it’s (tie) probably never going to happen ever again.

We looked at all the leagues and other mechanism around the world and found that we’re fair.

IPL is coming back to India. I think you have done a wonderful job of enhancing the brand image of IPL. Will there be any surprise this time?

I will break the news here. We are going 3D and we’ll be the first sporting body in the world to do so. I have seen the presentation, it’s very expensive but from next year onwards, we hope that we’ll be able to make it available for all games. This year we’re experimenting with four games—last four games will be 3D. I

t’s a major innovation, it will be available in cinemas, pubs and bars. We also want to introduce the spider cam wherein the camera actually moves across the ground like a spider web. Again it’s a hitech thing and we will be introducing it for the last four games. The IPL is here to build a brand and build on the consumer experience. Our job is to enhance the viewing features of the fans at home and in the stadium.

How much of a hit did BCCI and IPL take during last tournament?

At the end of the day, we’re creating IPL as a global property. For us, it’s most important to build the fan base. We’re a non-profit organisation. We took IPL to SA by creating a whole-new fanbase. We turned adversity into opportunity and put our best foot forward. Money was not the criteria.

Champions league was not a blockbuster. Are you trying to glamourise the Champions League and make it as big as IPL?

I think Champions League is champion of champions. The IPL players go back and play for their own country and as Indian consumers start to understand these teams, I think it will only become more popular. We’re starting from scratch, but we’ll keep investing in it.

Google to launch mobile phone to challenge iPhone's dominance.

Google To Launch Mobile Phones in China
January 19 2010 : Motorola seems to be basing its entire smartphone line-up on the Google Android platform. The latest handset spotted, belonging to this line, is the Motorola Zeppelin, which will launch as the XT800 by China Telecom.

The XT800 is yet another full-touchscreen smartphone with rounded corners, directed to consumers of the country's third-largest mobile operator. It will feature both GSM and CDMA radio technologies for compatibility with China Telecom's 3G network.

The device will also have a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, HD video recording, a 3.1" multi-touch display with 480x320 pixels in resolution, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, dual-SIM support, GPS, a 3.5mm audio jack, and HDMI output.

According to the latest information, the smartphone will be renamed Titanium and possibly sold under Sprint or Verizon in the US, with EV-DO support. Currently only Verizon Wireless. T-Mobile USA and Sprint retail Google Android smartphones, with AT&T rumoured to be launching two soon - Motorola Backflip/Enzo and HTC Lancaster - for a late launch, as the network hasn't showed any confidence in Google's open-source platform.

Google mobile phone launch date postponed in China

Google on Tuesday postponed the planned launch of its mobile phone in China amid a dispute with the government over Internet censorship and e-mail hacking that the search giant says may force it to leave the country.

"It is postponed," Google Inc. spokeswoman Marsha Wang said. She said a launch ceremony planned for Wednesday was canceled but declined to give a reason for the decision or to say when the launch might be rescheduled.

Also Tuesday, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said the search giant must obey China's laws and traditions, suggesting the government was giving no ground in talks over Internet censorship and Google's threat to pull out of the country.

It was the government's first direct comment on Google since the U.S. company said Jan. 12 it would no longer censor search results in China and might shut down its China-based site Google.cn. The announcement prompted an outpouring of support from Chinese Web surfers, who left flowers at Google offices and pleaded with the company to stay.

Google's phone is an effort by the company to join in competition for a share of China's mobile phone market, which is the world's most populous.

Google's announcement shocked the international business community and cheered many free-speech advocates. The Chinese government blocks access to Web sites abroad run by human rights groups and dissidents and material deemed subversive or pornographic.
